A boho fall baby shower is the quiet version of an autumn party. Venue and light
Boho depends on light more than any other theme, because the palette has no strong colour to carry it. Get this wrong and the room reads beige rather than warm.
Daylight is the goal. A room with a large window, a conservatory or a garden in the afternoon gives you the look with no effort. Book the party for early afternoon rather than evening if you can choose.
Overhead lighting is the enemy. Ceiling spots flatten texture and turn cream to grey, which is precisely what you are trying to avoid. Turn them off and use lamps, candles and string lights at table height instead.
Check the walls. A bright blue function room will fight your palette whatever you put on the table. If the venue has a strong wall colour, put the backdrop in front of it and aim every photograph that way.
Outdoors, watch the wind. Dried grasses, paper place cards and muslin all move. Weight everything, and have a covered fallback: an October afternoon can turn in twenty minutes.
Food and table
Boho food is grazing food. A long board down the middle of the table — cheeses, figs, grapes, nuts, honey, flatbread — does more for the look than any plated menu, and it removes the need for a serving plan.
Serve on wood and unglazed ceramic if you have it. Avoid disposable plastic, which undoes the whole aesthetic in one photograph. If you need disposables, palm-leaf or kraft ones sit in the palette.
For drinks, a glass dispenser with water, cucumber and mint, plus something warm in a flask once the afternoon cools.

- Fabric for the backdrop — muslin or gauze, three to four metres. The single highest-impact purchase.
- Dried florals — pampas, bunny tails, wheat. Buy early, they keep indefinitely.

- Candles and holders — plain glass, several small ones rather than one large.
