Baby shower invitation wording has one job: tell people what is happening, when, where, and what you need from them. Everything else is decoration. The most common mistake is not bad wording — it is a beautiful invitation that leaves out the RSVP date.

The six lines every invitation needs
- The headline. Sets the tone in four to six words.
- Who is being celebrated. The parent or parents, by name.
- The date and start time. Write the day of the week as well as the date.
- The location. Full address, plus a note if parking is difficult.
- The RSVP. A name, a contact method, and a deadline date.
- Anything else guests must know. Registry, surprise, bring a book instead of a card, dress code.

Writing an RSVP line people actually answer
Most hosts chase replies for two weeks. The wording is usually why.
Name one person. RSVP to Claire on 06 xx xx xx xx. An invitation that says only RSVP by the tenth gives the guest nobody to reply to, so they intend to ask later and forget.
Give one method, not three. Offering a phone number, an email and a form makes the guest choose, and choosing is where replies die. Pick the channel those guests already use.
Ask a closed question. Please reply yes or no by the tenth is answered in four seconds. Please let us know if you can make it invites a considered response that gets postponed.
Set the date two weeks before, not three days. Caterers and hosts both need the lead time, and a deadline that is obviously tight reads as optional.
If a quarter of your list has not replied by the deadline, one direct message each clears it. Group reminders are ignored by everyone who has already answered and by everyone who has not.
Delicate situations, worded carefully
A second or third baby. Some families prefer a sprinkle to a shower. Wording such as come sprinkle the new arrival signals a smaller event and lower gift expectations without anyone having to say so.
Rainbow babies. If the parents use the term, it belongs on the invitation. If they have not used it themselves, do not introduce it.
Adoption. Avoid pregnancy language entirely. Welcoming baby home or a shower to welcome their new arrival works for any route to parenthood.
A surprise shower. Say so twice: once at the top and once beside the arrival time. And give a time thirty minutes earlier than the real one.
When in doubt, ask the parents which wording they are comfortable with. It is their announcement, not yours.
Printed or digital
Both work. The choice should follow the guest list rather than the budget.
Printed suits older guests, formal showers, and anyone who keeps invitations. A card on a fridge is a standing reminder in a way a message thread is not, and the RSVP rate is usually higher for that reason alone. Use 250 to 350 gsm cardstock and post three days earlier than you think you need to.
Digital suits a young guest list, a short lead time, or a scattered one. Export as PNG or JPG rather than PDF — messaging apps compress PDFs badly and some recipients see only a file icon. Send individually rather than to a group, because group sends produce a thread where nobody replies directly.
A common approach is both: digital immediately for the date, printed a week later for the detail. It costs one extra export and noticeably improves attendance.
How to write the registry line
Registry information on the invitation is now normal in most places, though it is still considered presumptuous in some. Two safe approaches:
Put it on a separate small insert card, so the invitation itself stays about the celebration. Or keep it to one plain line at the bottom: Registry at [name]. Avoid any phrasing that reads as a request for money, which is where most invitations lose goodwill.
If the parents want something other than gifts — a book for the nursery, a written wish — say it plainly: Please bring a book instead of a card. Guests appreciate a clear instruction.
Four mistakes that cause problems
- No RSVP deadline. Without a date, replies arrive the night before. Always give one, about two weeks ahead.
- Decorative font on the address. Script lettering on a street name produces guests at the wrong house.
- No end time. Guests want to know whether this is two hours or all afternoon.
- The wrong year. More common than you would think on templates reused from a previous event. Proofread the full date twice.
